Dallas, Texas (February 11, 2011) The HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers®, TEAM Coalition and MillerCoors teamed up to prevent drunken driving at this year’s Super Bowl. At several sites around Cowboy Stadium, fans were invited to register as designated drivers, and received various incentives, including free soft drinks and Super Bowl memorabilia. More than 1,000 designated drivers signed up during the game.

HERO volunteers from Omni Hotels in Dallas helped staff the booths, led by Joseph Saatkamp, Vice President of Development for Omni. “It was an honor and a lot of fun to attend the Super Bowl in support of a good cause,” said Saatkamp. “We support the mission of the HERO Campaign, to promote the use of safe and sober designated drivers. The goal is to remind people that they can have a good time as long as they have a safe ride home.”

TEAM Coalition, of Alexandria, VA, a non-profit organization formed and supported by professional sports leagues, and MilllerCoors were partners at the booths. “We have always believed that a team approach including professional sports teams, stadiums, the HERO Campaign, and alcoholic beverage suppliers would have the greatest success in keeping fans safe during and after the games,” noted Jill Pepper, Executive Director of TEAM.

“We were proud to work with TEAM, Millers Coors, and our own team of HERO volunteers at the Super Bowl, and hope to continue our activities and growth in Texas in the future,” said Bill Elliott, chairman of the HERO Campaign. We hope our message—Be a HERO. Be a Designated Driver® — will continue to attract the support of fans and the general public to help us achieve our goal of ending drunken driving tragedies, which kill 14,000 in America each year, and injure more than 250,000 others.”

The HERO Campaign was founded by the Elliott family, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ in memory of their son John; who was killed by a drunk driver on his way home from Annapolis, MD. Ensign Elliott had recently graduated from the Naval Academy with honors in May of 2000. In 10 years, the Campaign has grown from a local movement to a nationally recognized organization.
